Scratch CulturePioneered by the Battersea Arts Centre, "Scratching" is the process of presenting work in development to audience in order to receive their feedback. There is now lively Scratch culture throughout the UK and since the Nightingale introduced Scratch Nights to brighton in January 2005 they have become increasingly popular. The Nightingale's Scratch Nights take place on Sunday nights monthly from September to April and in June & July. Artists are invited to present 2 - 10 minutes of work at a very early stage of development. At each night 5 pieces are presented, after which the audience, performers and their mentors head to the bar where feedback is received over a drink. Mentors note the feedback given and ensure that the feedback remains useful to the future development of the work. Companies who are interested in taking the work further then enter a dialogue with the venue and may receive support for development to the next stage.
